Illness Series 2024

Project Statement:

My two main passions - science and art. Through these pieces I aim to provoke deep conversation, encourage real shared experiences and realized feelings of fragility over the human body. I am immensely proud of this series particularly given this is the first time using alcohol inks. I envision more series like this in the future - perhaps exploring hormone disorders or metabolic ailments.

Dementia

Dementia is a term for a variety of degenerative cognitive impairments that affect memory, thinking, and social abilities, disrupting daily life. The most common type is Alzheimer's disease, but there are others, such as vascular and Lewy body dementia. Symptoms can include memory loss, confusion, and changes in mood.

Bruises

A bruise is an injury to the skin or underlying tissues that causes blood vessels to break, leading to discoloration. It often appears as a dark purple, blue, or black mark on the skin. Bruises may be caused by impact, falls, or certain medical conditions and usually heal over time, changing color as they mend.

Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells become rigid and shaped like sickles or crescent moons. This abnormal shape can lead to blockages in blood flow, causing pain, anemia, and increased risk of infections. It is inherited and primarily affects individuals of African, Mediterranean, or Middle Eastern descent. Symptoms often include fatigue, episodes of pain, and frequent infections.

Cancer

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. These cells can invade and damage surrounding tissues and organs. Cancer can occur in various forms, affecting different parts of the body, and can be caused by genetic factors, environmental influences, or lifestyle choices. Common treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and better outcomes.
